Dr William T. Kirwan is the founding father of The Psychodynamic Center Asia. He has been teaching Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for the over 20 years, in his current role as the Director of the Doctoral Counselling program in Manila, under the Asia Graduate School of Theology. More than 45 years of clinical counselling work have brought him to a strong belief in the freeing benefits of psychodynamic psychotherapy. He is keenly interested in helping people who struggle with such issues as negative early attachments, trauma, abuse, neglect and the resulting sense of crippling shame, all of which follow into adulthood.
Dr Kirwan holds an M.Div degree from Westminster Theological Seminary, an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University, a D.Min degree from Union Theological Seminary, a Ph.D in Counseling from St. Louis University, and a 2-year certificatein Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from the St. Louis Psychodynamic Institute. He also has a B.A. degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis on Psychology from Johns Hopkins University. He also holds membership in many Professional Psychological Organizations, including his roles as Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and as a Fellow in the John Townsend Institute.
Professionally, Dr. Kirwan has served as Senior Pastor of Liberty Presbyterian Church, and Counselor in The Christian Counseling Service, both in Randelstown, Maryland, Assistant Professor at Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, Associate Professor at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois, Psychologist at Psychiatric Associates, St. Louis, Psychologist in private practice, St. Louis, Adjunct Professor at Loyola University, Columbia, Maryland and Psychotherapist, at both Bayshore Counseling and Annapolis Counseling Centers.
Dr. Kirwan’s international teaching experience includes Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Ukraine, Turkey, Canada, Mongolia and the Philippines, where he currently runs the doctoral program at the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines/Asia Graduate School of Theology. Students in this program have benefited greatly from his hands-on case supervision. His first book, Biblical Concepts for Christian Counseling, published in 1984, is in its 16th printing, and he is preparing a manuscript entitled Self Deception and Christian Character; Finding the True Self in Christ, for his next major publication.
