Dr Swanie Khoo, who prefers to be known professionally as Dr Swan, holds a PhD in Clinical Counselling and a Master of Arts in Counselling. She is a Marriage and Family Counsellor and a Trauma Therapist with the Singapore Trauma Network for Children (KKH).

Dr Swan is an experienced psychotherapist who has spent many years working with individuals, couples, parents, and families. Through her extensive clinical work, she has journeyed with clients facing a wide range of psychological and relational challenges, including trauma, personality difficulties, and complex relational struggles.

Her therapeutic approach is deeply relational and psychodynamically informed, helping clients gain insight into the deeper patterns that shape their emotions, relationships, and sense of self. Dr Swan is committed to creating a thoughtful and compassionate therapeutic space where individuals and families can find healing, restore connection, and move toward greater emotional well-being.

She is also an accredited facilitator for Prepare/Enrich Marriage Program, and accredited trainer/facilitator for Parenting with Confidence workshops. In addition to the professional work, she volunteers with OvertheRainbow.org and Focus on the Family Singapore, as a workshop trainer/facilitator, promoting mental health wellness for youth and family life.

The therapeutic journey with couples and individuals will be based on an integration of scientifically grounded psychodynamic psychotherapy, Gottman Method Couples’ Therapy (trained in Level 1 & 2) and emotion-focused interventions (completed training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy). She has a wide-spectrum of experience working with couples, parents and children, and individuals across a range of mental health, interpersonal and behavioural issues.

Couples Therapy Work

Her experience is culminated through years of counselling practice – mainly working with couples, parents and children, and individuals, . She helps couples work through their conflicts by understanding their negative interaction cycle, and by breaking down their barriers in communication. She helps couples address unmet needs and underlying emotions and to interact in more loving, responsive and more emotionally connected ways which results in a more enduring and secured relationship.

Parent and Child Therapy Work

In her work with parents and children, she uses play therapy to observe and gain insights into a child’s problems. She would then help the child to explore emotions and deal with unresolved trauma. Through play,  children can learn new coping mechanisms and how to redirect inappropriate behaviours. She would require parents' involvement in the child's therapy journey, as it is a journey together with parents to help them through their difficulties with their children. This help parents improve relationships with their children and gives them tools and skills in the parenting journey.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy with clients has been her pinnacle work with her clientele -specialising in working through unresolved past trauma, childhood trauma, abusive relationships, and a wide range of mental health difficulties like anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar and personality disorders.

Dr Swan's experience was built through years of working in private practice in Singapore, and serving various NGOs – volunteering in various Girls’ Home in Singapore, Focus on the Family and Over the Rainbow. The crux of her work focused on rebuilding family relationships, strengthening bonds, and helping individuals heal through attachment psychotherapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Dr Swan is Malaysian chinese  who has made Singapore her home for over 25 years, raising four children along the way. Before settling in Singapore, she also lived in the US and Australia. Dr Swan is deeply passionate about supporting couples, individuals, parents, and children—bringing hope and healing to those struggling in their relationships, and empowering them toward greater purpose, meaning, and wholeness.
